I went to Kansas City with my friend Erin this weekend. It was awesome. We went to the Plaza (awesome outdoor shopping area modeled after Seville), saw Pirate Radio (also awesome), and went to the Nelson-Atkins art museum. I got some new clothes, and Audrey Niffinger's book Her Fearful Symmetry which features lake county/Chicagoland 20 year olds living in London. Who does that sound like :D? I'm only on page 20 but it's fabulous so far.

This is my entry for the LJ-Idol Competition
What I should care about, but don't.
I was on the phone with my mother the other day. I called her to ask some question about something or other, chatted a few minutes and got off the phone. About 2 hours later I realized it was her birthday and I forgot to say anything.
For most mothers and daughters that's a big deal, a last minute scramble to buy a present or plan a birthday dinner. For me, it was pretty normal.
My mother and I aren't close. When I was 2, she started dating a guy who didn't want a kid around so she dropped me off at my grandparents and took off for 2 weeks. No one knew where she was or what she was doing. When she came back to get me, Mems said, "Nope, she's not going." I've lived there ever since.
I still saw my mom sometimes, she'd pick me up when she got done waitressing on Friday nights and I'd stay the weekend, when she remembered to pick me up. There were many a night I stayed up excited to see her, only to wait for hours, finally calling her and being told "I forgot."
The older I got the more angry I got about how she treated me, I got bitter and mouthy and eventually sought therapy to deal with the issues. That's when I wrote a letter to my mother with no plans to send it.
Fourt pages of the hurt of abandonment, the anger at her new family and the cynicism it left me with... all wrapped up in a sealed envelope. It did help, it helped me let go of the anger and the bitterness I had built up.
But it changed the way I deal with my mother, she went from being an unhappy element of my life to being a non-entity. We stil didn't have a relationship, but I didn't care anymore. I moved past the anger and moved on.
Now 10 years later, I don't even remember my mother's birthday... and I know I should care, but I just don't.

It might not quite measure up to the bizarre Bill Nye & Harry Potter crossover I found a while ago, but the stuff I stumbled on fifteen minutes ago is still kind of a disconcerting corner of fandom. I am of course referring to RPS figure skater fanvids.

Things I'd like: Fic is at the top of my list, especially LoVe fic, preferably with a happy or hopeful ending, I particularly like post-season 3 fics; I also love Mac/Weevil fics. I only read Veronica with someone other than Logan if it is smut - I have a particular kink for dirty, dirty Veronica/Lamb smut, but would not turn my nose up at Veronica/Weevil smut, or Logan/Weevil or Weevil/Veronica/Logan smut. I am not a fan of Duncan or femslash. I have no icons and my journal is bare, although I confess that if someone made me a mood theme I would be clueless as to how to apply it to my journal. I am technically inept.
What I can do: Fic of any rating, although I am probably most comfortable with R or NC-17. I can write down and dirty smut for most chararcters/pairings, although I cannot write femslash, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't write lovey-smut of Veronica/Piz.
What I absolutely CAN'T do: graphics of any kind, femslash, Keith-centric smut (just can't go there!)

Things I'd like: LoVe fic of any kind: fluffy, angsty, smutty, it's all good. I would rather see a happy ending, 'cause life is already hard as it is. I also don't mind other people showing up, as long as they end up together. I also really love fics about what happened after the end of the series.
What I can do: Graphics (I'm better with icons, but I can also make wallpapers or headers or banners or something like that). I also love making fanmixes (but I won't do a subject I've done before --- I would love to try my hand at a Veronica mix, though, if anyone would want that).
What I absolutely CAN'T do: Fic, vids, moodthemes, fanmix for something I've done before (which is LoVe, Logan and a imaginary s4 of LoVe). I would rather work with LoVe or Logan or Veronica, and also I don't really wanna do stuff focusing on Piz, Duncan, Madison, Lamb or pairings other than LoVe.

Things I'd like: Logan/Veronica anything! Fic - Preferably 1500+ words, but whatevs if it's not ;) Anything from pre-series to early s3. Sexy times is encouraged, but not necessary. Graphics - A wallpaper or two would be nice! Other than that, any graphic of any character is fine.
What I can do: ~Drabbles (0-1500 words). I'm pretty okay with writing any character, so I can write a scene or a character piece. Graphics - I'm not very good with icons, but I can try! I can do headers, wallpapers, etc. Also fanmixes and fanvideos.
What I absolutely CAN'T do: Fic longer than 1500 words, moodthemes, layouts.

Guess I'm just a good man. *stabs* Well, I'm okay.
Watching V made me pull out my Firefly DVDS. Inara is so precious, I think Morenna Baccarin is gorgeous. A highlight of my week was when one of my friends confused this icon for me once, haha. Anywayyy V was fabulous. A little predictable, but the cast is fantastic and I think it's going to be a good show.

On Mal/Inara (because I'm watching Shindig). Wow, they really care for each other, don't they? But I can't see a relationship of theirs being very happy without someone compromising a whole lot. And that someone would be Inara, most likely. But it's the Jossverse and the most functional couple on any of his shows is Zoe/Wash, and that doesn't end so happily.
Can anyone rec me good Mal/Inara fic?

Things I'd like: She said "Request as many things as you want," so if it seems long, blame the rules. ;) Text icons would be cool--it's a funny show; non-texty icons are cool, too. Fic's at the top of the list, though: I prefer when Logan and Veronica are together (and happy); AUs rock my world, though I prefer happy ones--09ers in the military would be awesome (admit it, logan has "Maverick" written all over him! And women can be fighter pilots now, too. i'm just saying.), I love crossovers, if you wanted to try that. Duncan/Lilly is cool, I'd just prefer it not to be the whole point of the fic. I'm not a fan of Meg all that much, or Cassidy as he ended up, or how they handled Jackie either. The non-09ers are just as awesome; I totally miss Wallace, Mac, Weevil, and Piz. I like her friendships with people. Go crazy, have fun, rate it however you'd like, I read it all--I haven't read some good VM fic in a really long time. Wallpaper would be cool for my laptop: the screen is wonky-sized (1024x600)--i like darker tones for the desktop, bright/flashy colors hurt my eyes. I would totally be down with getting one of those soundtrack/story things--ficmixes? (clearly I'm down with the lingo) New music always rocks and I like seeing how other people apply it to characters. A vid would also be really cool, I've never had one made for me before; anything by Tegan and Sara, although I'm obsessed with their new album (Sainthood, out now!) if you wanted to use something new (added bonus: their songs tend to be short. I mean, if you wanted to do La Vie Boheme, rock on, but really, restrain yourself at "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)". if it makes you feel any better, now the song's in my head, too. But I always like hearing new music, too, if there's something else you've got in mind.
What I can do: fic (longer would take more time but that's fine, too, if someone's looking for the beginning of a series, short, AU, crack!AU, gen, het, both sides of slash, more than one partner, G-NC-17, Duncan/Lilly doesn't bother me, apocalypse!fic, crossovers...the theme here is that I'm flexible with the fic.), icons (characters, couples, actors(?can we do that with this?), text), ficmixes (is that what it's called where there's music/track graphics and writing?). I haven't done many wallpapers, but I have the resources and am totally willing to give it a go.
What I absolutely CAN'T do: vids, layouts. Fanmixes. Lamb, vinnie, Meg, or Jackie as more than just background people. Cassidy as he ended up in cannon. animated icons. podfic. dub-con/non-con, mpreg.

This is a memory of my Pops that makes me smile, for the LJ-Idol competition.
There are days when I close my eyes and picture him. His blue eyes crinkled, a trucker hat on his head, his cheeks... covered with gray stubble... raised in a smile. Everytime I do, the tears come, even now as I type this.
My Pops helped raise me, together he and my grandmother became parents in their golden years when my parents failed me. Come January it will be 10 years since he passed, but the memories are as vivid and painful as they were the day he died.
This is a memory of him... that always makes me smile through the tears.
Barbies used to be my obsession. I had boxes and boxes of them in my room, and whenever the family loaded up for a road trip I'd find a new Barbie waiting in the backseat to occupy me for the drive.
That was the case when I was about 8, My grandparents and I took off for Florida, them taking turns driving, me in the back seat with Barbie, Ken and piles of outfits. Now being that I was 8, changing the doll's clothes usually became a chore for whichever grandparent wasn't driving.
We'd been driving most of the day and Pops was taking a break, riding shotgun as Mems barrelled down the highway. Naturally it was about that time Ken needed to change into his "after work" clothes, so I handed the doll and outfit to Pops and he tried to change his clothes.
Anyone who's ever changed the clothes of a Barbie or Ken doll, knows it is not an easy task. Their limbs are rubbery and stiff, never bending the way you need and the clothes are small and tight. So it takes awhile, but Pops hands me the doll and I start playing.
But, Barbie and Ken make other plans so they have to change into evening wear. I tackle Barbie's costume change, after handing Ken off to Pops again. There's some grumbling and muttered cursewords, but eventually he passes a fully dressed Ken back to me.
So Ken and Barbie are ready, off to the opera or whatever "fancy" event my young mind created for them, they party it up for a bit, and it's time to go home and go to sleep. So they need new clothes, and I pass Ken to Pops.
It's just a few minutes later, when after a lost shoe and torn pants, Pops passes the doll back to me.
"Babydoll" he says, his nickname for me.
"Yes?" I answer, looking at his blue eyes, smiling at me in the backseat.
"If you take the god-damned clothes off this doll again, I will throw it out the fucking window." Did I mention my Pops was a sailor and cursed like one?
I nod and give him a kiss on the cheek then take the doll, and Ken and Barbie spend the rest of the day lounging in their pajamas while we drive on.

Oh, Joss! :) I'm still achy and cold-ey and tired. But when a good laugh comes along, I can't turn it down, even when it hurts to laugh.

Things I'd like: I’d love any of the following, or any combination of the following: a fic, icons and/or video involving Logan/Veronica, Leo/Veronica and/or Mac/Dick. Any rating on the story – I love M fics though.
What I can do: I can do any coupling although I of course have my faves (see above). I can do fics, art of pretty much any kind, fan mixes and videos. For fics I’m ok w/ any rating. Slash and femslash are a-ok too. And although I can write it, I prefer no Piz/Veronica.
What I absolutely CAN'T do: No layouts or moodthemes.

What I absolutely CAN'T do: i cannot write, and i cannot create fanvids.
